NEW: Parent Support and Study Group at Umbrella Psych.

Join me for a six-session parent support group that combines the latest research on effective parenting with a warm, convivial environment. Make connections, reduce parental guilt, and find your parenting strengths together. There will be readings to prepare for each group and there will be refreshments served.


This group will begin September 18th and will run until December 11th. Groups will happen once every two weeks (except for the night before Thanksgiving), Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm at the office of Amanda Nealon, 43 Cummins Highway, Roslindale, MA 02131. This group is open to parents of school-age children as well as teens. Groups are limited to 8 participants.


 

Parent Support Group Topics and Readings:

Session one: (Prepare by reading the first article, by Dr. Becky Kennedy) September 18

Introductions, getting to know each other, goals for the class, norms and rules and business.

-Emotional Regulation: yours, theirs, and the family’s.

-Emotional granularity, emotions scientist, separating yours from theirs

-Boundaries, limits, and emotional expression, accepting emotions

-Both and perspective from Dr. Becky Goodinside


Session two: Emotional regulation as a parenting skill (Reading by Marc Brackett) October 2

-Becoming an emotions scientist and how we talk about and respond to emotions

-Getting to know your own emotions, the length of your fuse, and your needs. -Developing skills for regulating yourself, developing skills for helping your child regulate. 

-Growth mindset for emotional regulation.


Session three: Boundaries, limits, and consequences (Reading TBD, behaviorism chapter or Prentiss Hemphill) October 16th

-Your boundaries, safety boundaries, your kids boundaries

-Rules, rituals, and routines

-Natural consequences

-Behaviorism science (positive and negative reinforcement, punishments)


Session four: Communication skills (Reading from Non-Violent Communication &/or Faber and Mazlish) October 30th

-Accepting your own emotions, wants and desires and expressing them well

-Asking questions to illicit better communication

-Active listening, hearing and understanding others


Session five: Attunement, connection, and play (Larry Cohen Playful Parenting article)

November 13th

-Finding your play style, finding your moments, filling your own tank

-Finding opportunities with your family

-Building supportive routines for when times are rough


Session six: Self-care, self-assessment, and boundaries at work and in the community (Reading TBD) December 11th

-The revolutionary role of setting effective limits at work and in your community in order 

to preserve your parenting energy, skill, support, and time.
